As protests get underway, Memphis publishes video documenting Tyre Nichols' death. This is what the video depicts.
Tennessee's MEMPHIS — According to video of the violent arrest published on Friday, police used a Taser, pepper spray, and a baton on a 29-year-old Black driver during a horrific traffic stop that sent him to the hospital before he passed away three days later.
One of the four films, which the city of Memphis published on Friday, shows officers shouting at Tyre Nichols to get out of his car before physically taking him from it. Officers can be seen attempting to shock Nichols in the footage, but he flees.
In a another video, one cop can be seen rushing toward Nichols, who is lying on the ground, and other officers. When Nichols continually screams for his mother, the cop threatens to pepper spray him. While other cops are punching Nichols in the face, the officer steps back, pulls out a baton, and strikes Nichols.
In one video, an officer can be seen hitting Nichols repeatedly while the other officers are holding him.
The officers yelled obscenities at Nichols the entire time.
Nichols is seen slumped to the ground next to the car after the beating as officers talk about the arrest. The four films were captured by both officers' body cams and a SkyCop surveillance camera.
After the stop, Nichols, a FedEx employee who loved to skateboard and had a 4-year-old son, was taken to the hospital in severe condition.
